Climate protection and sustainability are the new guiding stars. As coordinator of German aerospace policy, I support all activities aimed at solving these challenges.

As an international meeting place for a large number of exhibitors from Europe and the U.S., thousands of visitors and B2B participants from 35 nations, Airtec is an excellent opportunity to exchange views on future issues in the industry, but also to initiate business.

Bavaria is home to a unique symbiosis of outstanding companies operating in the aerospace sector and cutting-edge research institutions. I am therefore delighted that participants from all over the globe are coming to Augsburg for Airtec 2024 to experience first-hand the future of aerospace and air mobility and to share views and ideas on new developments. It is here that progress in zero emission aviation and opportunities offered by AI for future air mobility are presented, but innovative defence technologies and the increasing significance of the space economy will also be playing a central role – and all of this at the highest level with the relevant experts!

Augsburg is the ideal venue for such an event. This was already demonstrated last year when Airtec drew more than 4,000 trade visitors and guests to Augsburg – the city of the Fuggers – from 31 nations and from a wide range of fields in the aerospace industry. It was a huge success and the same is sure to happen again this year, because Airtec offers the best opportunities for the transfer of knowledge and ideas – paving the way for progress and innovation!

With pioneering aerospace and defence innovations developed and brought to industrial application here, our city has established itself as a centre of excellence for this sector. Building on this tradition, scientists and engineers began many years ago to seek answers to emerging challenges, including propulsion technologies, resource efficiency, materials, value chains, automation and environmental sustainability. As a result, fields such as New Space, Advanced Air Mobility and Zero Emission technologies have become central focus areas of research.

From 20 to 22 October 2026, Augsburg will host AIRTEC for the third time. In response to strong demand, the event has since been expanded to include DefenceTec and the UAS Counter Expo & Conference, contributing to the healthy growth of Augsburg as a trade fair and congress destination. This supplier exhibition for the aerospace, security and defence industries is held here in Augsburg, an authentic venue with deep roots in aerospace as well as security and defence.

Dear Guests of DefenceTec 2026,

The widespread use of drones has fundamentally changed the nature of modern warfare. In Russia’s war against Ukraine, FPV drones have created a “kill zone” along the front line, medium-range systems are wearing down logistics and supply chains, and long-range drones are striking critical infrastructure—sometimes thousands of kilometres away from the battlefield.

This demonstrates one clear reality: without effective counter-drone capabilities (C-UAS), neither troops on the front line nor critical infrastructure in the rear can be adequately protected. For us as the governing coalition, building robust C-UAS capabilities in Germany is therefore a top priority.

We can already look back on some important achievements. Procurement processes have been accelerated, new formats for rapid testing and evaluation have been introduced, and direct cooperation between industry and the armed forces has been strengthened. The underlying principle is both simple and sound: what we need now to close capability gaps is not the perfect solution, but the one that can be deployed quickly.

At the same time, we must acknowledge that achieving comprehensive, nationwide C-UAS capabilities remains a significant challenge. One reason is the complex and evolving nature of the drone threat. There is no single solution capable of delivering comprehensive counter-drone protection. Reliable drone detection and defence require the integration of multiple technologies that together provide seamless, dependable protection and effective countermeasures.

This kind of technology and innovation can only emerge from a strong and healthy defence ecosystem. Fortunately, we do not have to build such an ecosystem from scratch. Germany—and Bavaria in particular—is home to one of Europe’s strongest industrial and innovation landscapes. Our success is built on a powerful combination of established industry leaders, a vibrant start-up ecosystem, and highly capable small and medium-sized enterprises, all of which are driving innovation every day, particularly in the fields of unmanned systems and C-UAS. Our goal is now to ensure that these innovations reach those who need them as quickly as possible.

It is precisely in this spirit that DefenceTec 2026 here in Augsburg brings together technology providers, system integrators, and end users in a focused working environment. Existing capability gaps meet practical solutions. In doing so, DefenceTec 2026 is creating a place where C-UAS is not merely discussed, but actively advanced.

From the beginning, water played a significant role in the city’s develop-ment. AIRTEC 2022 takes place in a very challenging time for the aerospace industry. Air traffic is expected to grow even further. At the same time inflation, rising energy prices, skills shortages and supply chain issues are major burdens for the aerospace industry. This makes it all the more important to further improve the technological excellence of our own industry and to push international cooperation with reliable partners. AIRTEC offers an excellent platform for this.

I am very pleased that zero-emission aviation is one of the priorities of AIRTEC 2022. It is one of the German governments key objectives to make Germany an international leader in climate-neutral flying. This of course requires perseverance and will only succeed as a joint effort by politics, business and science. That’s why fairs and conferences like AIRTEC are so important.

I am convinced that Germany is well positioned in the aerospace sector including the thriving New Space sector and that our companies are efficient, competitive and highly flexible when it comes to quickly developing and implementing new innovations.
